Mon Jan 20 04:37:41 UTC 2025: ## Massive Fire Erupts at Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj; 180 Cottages Destroyed
**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh:** A major fire broke out at the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj on Sunday evening, engulfing approximately 180 cottages belonging to Gita Press in Sector 19, near Shastri Bridge. The blaze, which started around 4:10 PM, is believed to have originated from a gas cylinder leak during tea preparation in the Gita Press kitchen. Two gas cylinders subsequently exploded, fueling the rapid spread of the fire.
Twelve fire tenders were deployed, bringing the fire under control within an hour. While approximately 500 people were safely evacuated, a significant amount of property was destroyed, including a sage’s cash amounting to ₹100,000. Reports indicate that several tents and belongings were also lost. One individual sustained injuries and was hospitalized.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath swiftly visited the site to assess the situation, receiving a phone call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for an update. The incident occurred shortly after PM Modi had conducted an aerial survey of the Kumbh Mela.
Authorities highlighted the preparedness of the Kumbh Mela’s fire safety measures, including the deployment of advanced Articulating Water Towers (AWT) and over 350 fire brigade personnel. However, Gita Press representatives stated that the fire likely originated from an unauthorized area outside their designated space.
Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the fire. While no fatalities were reported, the incident caused significant disruption and raised concerns about fire safety protocols within the densely populated Mela grounds. Statements from various officials and eyewitness accounts are being gathered to ascertain the full extent of the damage and the precise sequence of events.
