Sun Jan 19 21:57:20 UTC 2025: ## TikTok Shut Down in US Following New Law

**Washington D.C. -** TikTok, the popular short-form video platform, has been effectively shut down in the United States as of January 18th, following the enforcement of a new law banning the app. The app has been removed from Google Play and Apple’s App Stores, and videos are no longer accessible on the US website.

The ban, signed into law last year by President Biden, prohibits downloads and use of the app within the United States. TikTok informed its US users of the shutdown, citing the new legislation as the reason for the service interruption. Other ByteDance apps like CapCut, Lemon8, Gau, and Hype have also ceased service to US users.

President-elect Donald Trump has indicated he may explore solutions to reinstate TikTok after his inauguration. He previously attributed his campaign’s success to TikTok’s reach among young voters and even emphasized the billions of views his videos received on the platform during the 2020 election. Trump expressed his support for keeping TikTok operational in the US for a time on December 22nd.

In an internal email to employees, TikTok assured them that President Trump intends to work toward a solution to restore the app after taking office on January 20th. The company stated that teams are working to restore services as soon as possible. This blackout follows a US Supreme Court decision upholding the law banning the video-sharing platform.

TikTok enjoys immense popularity across various demographics, used for entertainment, education, and technological engagement. Its influence extends to creating social media influencers who gain fame through viral content. The platform’s future in the US remains uncertain, pending potential action from the incoming administration. While President Trump has expressed optimism, the path to lifting the ban remains unclear, especially given the previous pressure on ByteDance to sell the platform.
