Sat Jan 18 23:38:20 UTC 2025: ## Gaza Ceasefire Deal Reached, But Israel Reserves Right to Resume Fighting

**Jerusalem, January 19, 2025** – A ceasefire in Gaza is set to take effect on Sunday, January 19th, following a security cabinet meeting chaired by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The deal includes the release of 33 Israeli hostages held in Gaza, with the majority alive. However, Mr. Netanyahu stressed that this is a temporary, 42-day ceasefire, and that Israel reserves the right to resume hostilities with the support of the United States if necessary.

In a televised address, Mr. Netanyahu stated, “We reserve the right to resume the war if necessary, with American support,” adding that Israel would respond forcefully should the need arise. He emphasized his commitment to bringing home all hostages, stating, “We are thinking of all our hostages… I promise you that we will achieve all our objectives and bring back all the hostages.” The Prime Minister also claimed that Israel has fundamentally altered the Middle East landscape since the conflict began.

The first phase of the ceasefire agreement involves the release of 737 hostages. While this marks a significant step towards de-escalation, the possibility of renewed conflict remains a major concern.
