**GAZA CITY, PALESTINE –** A long-awaited ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip officially began at 11:15 AM local time (9:15 GMT) on Sunday, bringing a temporary end to a devastating 15-month conflict that has claimed the lives of at least 46,899 Palestinians and 1,139 Israelis. The ceasefire, brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, was delayed nearly three hours due to what Hamas initially described as “technical reasons” surrounding the handover of three Israeli captives.
The agreement stipulates a mutual cessation of hostilities and the release of prisoners. Three Israeli captives – Romi Gonen, Doron Steinbrecher, and Emily Damari – were handed over to Israel, triggering the ceasefire. Four more Israeli captives will be released within seven days. Israel will also release approximately 95 Palestinian prisoners.
Despite the ceasefire, the final hours before the agreement saw continued Israeli military action, resulting in at least 19 Palestinian deaths and 36 injuries, according to Gaza’s Civil Defence.
Palestinians in Gaza are now beginning the arduous process of rebuilding their lives, with thousands attempting to return to their homes, many of which have been destroyed. The Gaza Government Media Office reported that thousands of police officers have been deployed to maintain order, and municipalities are starting to reopen streets. The return of displaced Palestinians is expected to begin next week.
The ceasefire has been met with relief and cautious optimism among Palestinians, many of whom expressed gratitude for the international mediation efforts. However, the sheer scale of destruction and loss of life casts a long shadow over the fragile peace.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed the release of the captives and the commencement of the ceasefire. Netanyahu faces ongoing investigations at the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes and genocide. The 15-month conflict is considered the deadliest in the 21st century.
