**New Delhi, January 19, 2025** – A thick blanket of fog engulfed the Delhi-NCR region and other parts of North India on Sunday, causing widespread disruption to train services and daily life. At least 41 trains departing from Delhi were delayed due to reduced visibility. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported a minimum temperature of 10° Celsius in Delhi, with air quality categorized as “very poor,” registering at 340 on the Air Quality Index (AQI).
The fog impacted transportation across the region, including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and North Rajasthan. In Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, devotees attending the Maha Kumbh Mela braved the dense fog, with the IMD forecasting foggy conditions to persist until January 20th. Similar conditions were reported in Karnal, Haryana, and Agra, where even the Taj Mahal was obscured by the heavy fog.
Authorities in Delhi set up 235 temporary shelters to assist homeless individuals seeking refuge from the cold. The IMD predicts that fog conditions will improve across North India after January 20th, with rainfall expected in the Western Himalayan region from January 21st onwards, leading to a temperature rise and reduced fog. This rainfall is expected to peak around January 22nd-23rd. Meanwhile, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir experienced a cold wave, and fresh snowfall was reported in the Bhalessa area of Doda.
