Sun Jan 19 09:39:00 UTC 2025: ## India’s Champions Trophy Squad: Suryakumar Yadav’s Absence a Blow, Says Raina

**Dubai, UAE –** Former Indian all-rounder Suresh Raina has expressed concern over the absence of Suryakumar Yadav from India’s Champions Trophy squad, calling the middle-order batter a crucial “X-factor” for the tournament. Yadav, along with fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, were notable omissions from the squad announced on Saturday. Five other players from the 2023 ODI World Cup squad – Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur, Ishan Kishan – also missed selection, while Ravichandran Ashwin has retired.

Raina highlighted Yadav’s ability to score at a rapid pace and dominate oppositions, stating that his absence puts more pressure on the out-of-form top three batsmen. He also suggested that Siraj, despite his impressive form in Australia, could still be called up if Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness concerns persist, or if Mohammed Shami struggles to regain form after injury. Raina praised the inclusion of Harshit Rana, acknowledging his skills but reiterating his belief in Siraj as the superior option if Bumrah is unavailable.

The selection of Shubman Gill as vice-captain received Raina’s approval. He praised Gill’s recent ODI performances and believes the appointment is a smart, forward-thinking move by captain Rohit Sharma.

Raina highlighted the importance of left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav and all-rounder Hardik Pandya given the expected slow, turning pitches in Dubai. He also expressed concern about the uncertainty surrounding Bumrah’s and Shami’s fitness, and the need to solidify the spin bowling partnership alongside Kuldeep.

Despite these concerns, Raina remains confident in India’s chances, emphasizing Rohit Sharma’s leadership and the team’s overall strength. He also backed Rishabh Pant as the preferred wicket-keeper over KL Rahul, urging Pant to display greater responsibility and bat for longer periods in the 50-over format.
