Sun Jan 19 11:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Houston Braces for Arctic Blast, Wintry Mix Expected

**HOUSTON, TX (January 17, 2025)** – Houston is preparing for a significant drop in temperatures and a potential wintry mix of precipitation, starting Monday night and lasting through Wednesday morning. A dry arctic cold front arrives Saturday, bringing a noticeable wind shift and significantly colder temperatures by early next week.

Sunday’s Houston Marathon will see temperatures in the mid-30s, feeling like the upper 20s with wind chill, posing a headwind challenge for runners.

The dangerous weather begins Monday night as temperatures plummet below freezing. If the high on Tuesday doesn’t reach above freezing (currently forecast at 32°F), the area could experience 36 hours of sub-freezing temperatures. Monday afternoon will bring moisture, leading to a potential mix of rain, sleet, and freezing rain, primarily north of I-10. By Tuesday morning, temperatures are expected to drop into the mid-20s, transitioning all precipitation to snow. Sleet accumulating Monday night will freeze under the snow, creating hazardous road conditions. Another hard freeze is anticipated Wednesday morning, with temperatures plummeting to the teens and lower 20s. Thawing is not expected until Wednesday afternoon.

Chief Meteorologist Anthony Yanez urges residents to prepare for the freeze, suggesting protecting plants and pets, draining sprinkler systems, and winterizing pipes. He cautions against relying on long-range weather forecasts, emphasizing the careful analysis of multiple weather models used by the KPRC 2 Stormtracker 2 Weather Team. The team will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates across all platforms.
