Sat Jan 18 08:28:27 UTC 2025: ## Israel and Hamas Agree to 60-Day Ceasefire
**GAZA CITY, January 17, 2025** – A tentative ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, offering a potential end to the months-long conflict, has been reached. The 60-day deal, still subject to final approval, includes provisions for the release of hostages held by both sides, increased humanitarian aid to Gaza, and the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure.
The agreement follows escalating international pressure and a dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Data reveals that at least 85% of Gaza’s population faces critical levels of food insecurity, with aid deliveries sharply reduced since Hamas’ October 7th attack. The ceasefire aims to restore the flow of at least 600 aid trucks daily.
The hostage situation remains a critical element, with approximately 98 hostages still unaccounted for, many feared dead. The fate of these individuals, including children and the elderly, has fueled protests in both Israel and Palestine. The deaths of six hostages found by Israeli forces in September further exacerbated tensions and intensified calls for a resolution.
The extent of the devastation in Gaza is also staggering. A UNOSAT assessment shows that 69% of structures are damaged, with 60,368 completely destroyed and a further 20,050 severely damaged. The northern Gaza governorate of Jabalya has been particularly hard hit.
While the ceasefire represents a significant step towards de-escalation, challenges remain. Israel accuses Hamas of reneging on certain aspects of the agreement, and a recent Israeli airstrike killing 75 people prompted Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to postpone the Cabinet meeting to ratify the deal. The situation remains tense, and the final approval of the ceasefire remains uncertain.
