**CHENNAI, INDIA (January 18, 2025)** – B. Srilakshmi, an 80-year-old retired lecturer, proves that retirement doesn’t mean slowing down. For nearly three decades, she has been writing textbooks on food science and nutrition, recently completing yet another volume. Her dedication began over four decades ago when she noticed a critical gap in available resources for students at Anna Adarsh College for Women. Existing textbooks were either too expensive or insufficient for the Homescience curriculum.
Srilakshmi’s books, now used in numerous colleges across the country, have become essential resources for undergraduate students in Home Science, Food Technology, and Allied Health Sciences. Her work on dietetics is already in its ninth edition. She meticulously researches her material, utilizing libraries, medical journals, and her extensive experience, including time spent at the National Institute of Nutrition in Hyderabad. The books are praised for their clear, accessible style, incorporating diagrams and flowcharts to simplify complex concepts.
For Srilakshmi, the greatest reward comes from the students who credit her books with helping them secure employment. While she enjoyed teaching, she finds writing equally fulfilling, stating that it allows her to connect with younger generations at her own pace, ensuring her material is both easy to read and understand. Her continued contributions highlight the enduring value of education and the power of lifelong learning.
