TIRUNELVELI, January 18, 2025 – Two teenage girls drowned in the Tamirabharani river near Mukkoodal in Tirunelveli district on Friday evening. Vaishnavi, 13, and Mari Anushya, 16, were bathing with family members when they were swept into deeper water. While four others were rescued, the two girls drowned despite rescue attempts.
The incident occurred while three families were enjoying a Pongal holiday bath near the Sri Muthumaalaiyamman Temple. Local residents alerted police and fire and rescue services. Vaishnavi’s body was recovered Friday evening, while Mari Anushya’s body was recovered Saturday morning after a search operation. Both bodies were sent to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Veeravanallur police have registered a case.
