**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh:** Spiritual orator and motivational speaker Jaya Kishori has encouraged young people to attend the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, believing it offers a path to peace and happiness. Speaking exclusively to NDTV at the ongoing Maha Kumbh, Kishori described her first experience of taking a dip in the Sangam (confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers) as surreal and transformative, stating it instilled a profound sense of inner calm and positive energy.
Kishori emphasized that today’s youth often seek lasting happiness, a concept she equates with “anand” (bliss) rather than fleeting pleasure. She believes the Maha Kumbh provides an opportunity to achieve this, offering a unique and enriching experience. The Maha Kumbh, the world’s largest religious gathering, began on January 13th and is expected to draw around 45 crore people over its 45-day duration.
Addressing past criticism regarding her possession of luxury goods, Kishori argued for a balanced approach to materialism and spirituality. Referencing the Bhagavad Gita, she explained that material pursuits are not inherently contradictory to spiritual growth, emphasizing the importance of fulfilling one’s dharma (duty). She suggested that while detachment is an option, a householder’s life can also incorporate both material comfort and spiritual practice. She clarified that the problem arises when material possessions control an individual rather than the other way around.
Kishori’s views reflect her unique blend of modern and traditional perspectives, which led to her receiving the ‘Best Creator Award for Social Change’ from Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2024. Her message at the Maha Kumbh is a clear call to young Indians to seek spiritual fulfillment while navigating the complexities of modern life.
