Sat Jan 18 10:31:33 UTC 2025: ## High Court Conference Highlights Urgent Need to Reduce Court Backlogs
**Visakhapatnam, January 18, 2025** – A two-day regional judicial conference in Visakhapatnam has underscored the critical need to address the burgeoning backlog of cases in Indian courts. The South Zone-II Regional Judicial Conference, titled “Court Dockets: Explosion and Exclusion,” brought together judges, lawyers, and legal experts to discuss solutions to expedite justice.
Justice P.S. Narasimha of the Supreme Court of India emphasized the detrimental effect of delayed justice, citing examples of protracted property and matrimonial disputes. He warned against over-reliance on artificial intelligence (AI) in the judicial system, cautioning that while technology can assist, it shouldn’t replace the crucial human element of analysis and decision-making.
Justice Aniruddha Bose, Director of the National Judicial Commission and former Supreme Court Judge, attributed the rising caseload to increased public reliance on courts, coupled with judicial shortages and procedural inefficiencies.
Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur of the Andhra Pradesh High Court highlighted the potential of technology to streamline processes and reduce delays, advocating for the elimination of outdated procedures and greater use of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. The conference, organized by the National Judicial Academy in collaboration with the Andhra Pradesh High Court and Judicial Academy, saw participation from Chief Justices of other High Courts, including Uttarakhand and Jharkhand. The event concluded with a renewed commitment to finding practical solutions to alleviate the burden on the judicial system and ensure timely justice for all.
