Sat Jan 18 03:03:16 UTC 2025: ## Gaza Residents Hope for New Beginning After Ceasefire Deal
**GAZA CITY** – A fragile ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, set to begin Sunday, has ignited a flicker of hope among Gaza’s beleaguered population. After 15 months of devastating conflict that has left 90% of the population displaced and much of the infrastructure in ruins, residents are clinging to the prospect of an end to their suffering.
The war has inflicted widespread destruction. Around 60% of buildings, including homes, schools, and hospitals, have been damaged or destroyed by Israeli airstrikes and military operations. Essential services like healthcare, sanitation, and water have been severely compromised, creating critical humanitarian challenges.
UN News spoke with displaced civilians in Nuseirat, central Gaza, who expressed their determination to return home and rebuild their lives, despite the overwhelming devastation. Um Mohammed Hanoun, whose home was destroyed, plans to clear the rubble and set up a tent on her land. Others echoed similar sentiments, prioritizing reunification with loved ones and a return to normalcy. Sami Abu Tahoun, a child displaced from Gaza City, longs to see his father again after being separated during the conflict. Ayman Abu Radwan described the immense hardships endured, including the cold, lack of resources, and the daily suffering witnessed. Mohammed al-Quqa highlighted the lasting psychological toll on families who have endured unspeakable horrors.
While the ceasefire offers a glimmer of hope, significant challenges remain. The World Food Programme (WFP) has 80,000 tons of food ready to distribute, but the free movement of humanitarian aid and personnel is crucial. Over 12,000 people require medical evacuation, and the healthcare system is in desperate need of repair. The WHO has already evacuated some patients, but more international assistance is needed. Furthermore, nearly 900 aid workers have been killed since October 2023, yet UNRWA staff continue to provide vital healthcare services.
The UN Secretary-General has welcomed the ceasefire agreement, and the international community now faces the immense task of rebuilding Gaza and addressing the deep-seated trauma inflicted by the prolonged conflict. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether this ceasefire marks a genuine turning point towards lasting peace and recovery.
