**Mumbai, India** – Kangana Ranaut’s directorial debut, *Emergency*, has had a strong start at the box office, marking her highest opening day collection in the last five years. The film, released this Friday after several delays, raked in ₹2.35 crore (approximately $285,000 USD) on its opening day, according to Sacnilk.
This surpasses the opening day collections of her previous films, including *Tejas* (₹1.25 crore), *Dhaakad* (₹1.20 crore), and even her multi-lingual biopic *Thalaivii* (₹1.46 crore). While her pre-pandemic film *Panga* held the previous record with a ₹2.70 crore opening, *Emergency* signifies a significant comeback for the actress-director.
Despite modest overall numbers, the film saw higher than average occupancy in key cities, particularly Chennai (25%) and Mumbai (23.75%). Night shows proved most popular, with an occupancy rate of 36.25%, compared to a mere 5.98% for morning shows. The Hindi occupancy for the film stood at 19.26%.
*Emergency*, a political thriller set against the backdrop of India’s 1975-77 Emergency, features an ensemble cast including Shreyas Talpade, Milind Soman, Mahim Chaudhary, Anupam Kher, and the late Satish Kaushik. The screenplay is by Ritesh Shah. While the opening numbers are not blockbuster-level, they represent a considerable achievement for Ranaut and suggest a promising trajectory for the film’s box office run.
