**New Delhi:** The Supreme Court on Friday sharply criticized the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for its handling of the city’s massive solid waste problem, expressing shock at an affidavit stating that 3,000 tonnes of untreated waste will remain unprocessed daily until December 2027.
The bench, comprising Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan, termed the situation “blatant” and questioned the MCD’s plan to address the issue. The court noted that the MCD’s daily waste processing capacity falls significantly short of the city’s daily generation of over 11,000 tonnes of solid waste, with a daily shortfall of untreated waste reaching 3,000 tonnes. The court demanded clarification on the disposal location of this untreated waste, with the MCD stating it is being sent to landfill sites in Bhalswa and Ghazipur.
Expressing concern that the problem could worsen to 5,000 tonnes per day within a year, the court warned of drastic measures, including halting construction activities in the national capital, if the situation doesn’t improve. The court also highlighted the lack of coordination between the Delhi government and the central government in tackling the issue. The bench directed the central government to intervene and facilitate better coordination between the relevant bodies. The matter will be revisited on January 27th. The court emphasized the need for strict adherence to the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, and reiterated the critical importance of addressing this major environmental concern for the national capital.
