**HYDERABAD, January 18, 2025** – The smooth operation of Hyderabad’s Metro Rail, carrying nearly 500,000 passengers daily across its 69.2 km network, relies heavily on the often-overlooked dedication of its Power Supply Systems (PSS) and Overhead Electrification (OHE) teams. These teams, employed by L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad (L&TMRH), are responsible for maintaining the complex infrastructure that keeps the trains running for 18 hours a day.
Their work involves meticulous inspection and maintenance of four 132kV substations, a vast network of overhead lines, and the traction power systems. This includes regular checks on transformers, rectifiers, and inverters, as well as the crucial 138.2 km of 25kV overhead lines ensuring power reaches the trains via pantographs. The teams work around the clock in shifts to ensure uninterrupted service, quickly troubleshooting any issues to minimize disruption for commuters.
The job is physically demanding, requiring work in extreme temperatures and challenging weather conditions. Engineers, technicians, and support staff face heat exceeding 40°C and the hazards of monsoon season work. Despite these challenges, their rapid response and use of advanced tools minimize service interruptions, often going unnoticed by passengers.
L&TMRH CEO & MD K.V.B Reddy lauded the teams’ dedication and expertise, highlighting their crucial role in providing a reliable and efficient metro service. He emphasized that the teams’ behind-the-scenes efforts are the backbone of the system’s success. The COO, Sudhir Chiplunkar, and senior engineers B. Uday Kiran, Ch. Reecha, and S.M. Nutana, also spoke of the intricate work involved in ensuring the smooth operation of the Hyderabad Metro.
