**Mumbai, India** – Director Abhishek Kapoor’s latest venture, the period drama “Azaad,” starring newcomers Aaman Devgan and Rasha Thadani, has stumbled out of the gate, registering a disappointing box office opening. The film, heavily promoted as the launchpad for Devgan and Thadani, managed to collect a mere ₹1.5 crore (approximately $180,000 USD) on its first day, according to Sacnilk.
Occupancy rates were abysmal, with morning shows achieving a meager 5% and evening shows slightly improving to 26%. This starkly contrasts with Kapoor’s previous directorial successes, “Kai Po Che” (₹4.5 crore opening day) and “Kedarnath” (₹6.8 crore opening day), both of which went on to become significant box office hits. Even his more recent film, “Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui,” despite underperforming overall, had a considerably stronger opening.
The film’s weak debut marks Kapoor’s lowest-ever opening day collection. “Azaad” faced competition from Kangana Ranaut’s “Emergency,” which also had a subdued opening, earning ₹2.5 crore on its first day. While Kapoor has a track record of launching successful newcomers, including Sushant Singh Rajput and Sara Ali Khan, “Azaad’s” poor performance raises questions about its future box office prospects.
