Sat Jan 18 11:48:10 UTC 2025: ## Modi Government Approves 8th Pay Commission, Boosting Salaries for Millions of Central Employees
**New Delhi, India** – The Indian Union Cabinet, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the 8th Pay Commission, paving the way for significant salary increases for millions of central government employees and pensioners. The decision, announced Thursday, comes ahead of the upcoming Union Budget.
While the exact percentage increase remains undisclosed, experts predict a substantial rise. The “fitment factor,” a key multiplier used in salary calculations, is projected to increase from 2.57 to 2.86. This could nearly triple the minimum basic salary, potentially rising from ₹18,000 to ₹51,480 per month.
The move follows years of advocacy from employee unions, who previously sought a higher fitment factor. The 8th Pay Commission will review salaries, pensions, bonuses, allowances, and other benefits for approximately 50 lakh central government employees, including defense personnel, and 65 lakh pensioners. The recommendations of the previous 7th Pay Commission, implemented in 2016, are currently in effect. The new commission’s recommendations are expected to be implemented soon. This marks a significant financial commitment by the government, impacting a substantial portion of its workforce and retirees.
