Tue Jan 14 07:24:43 UTC 2025: ## Trump Indictment Thwarted by Election Win, Special Counsel Report Reveals

**Washington, D.C. –** A report released Tuesday by U.S. Special Counsel Jack Smith details a four-count indictment against President-elect Donald Trump for attempting to obstruct the 2020 election results. The report concludes that while the evidence was sufficient for a conviction, Trump’s November election victory prevented the case from going to trial.

Smith’s investigation focused on Trump’s alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, including pressuring state officials, promoting false claims of widespread voter fraud, and attempting to utilize fraudulent electors. This culminated in the January 6th, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. The report also covers a separate case involving the illegal retention of classified documents after Trump left office in 2021; however, that section remains sealed due to ongoing legal proceedings against Trump associates.

Despite facing significant legal challenges and repeated delays, including a Supreme Court ruling granting former presidents broad immunity, Smith’s investigation amassed substantial evidence. Much of this evidence, including findings from a 2022 congressional panel report, corroborates the special counsel’s conclusions.

Trump, who has consistently denounced the investigations as politically motivated, dismissed Smith as a “lamebrain prosecutor” and sought to block the report’s release. However, his efforts were unsuccessful. The Justice Department, citing a longstanding policy against prosecuting a sitting president, dropped both cases following Trump’s election win.

While the report details a compelling case against Trump, the timing of his re-election has effectively shielded him from facing trial on these charges at this time. The classified documents case against two of Trump’s associates remains active.
