**Prayagraj, India** – Millions of Hindu devotees have begun converging on Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, for the Maha Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious gathering. Expected to draw 400 million people over six weeks, this “great” Kumbh Mela (held every 12 years) sees pilgrims bathe in the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers, to achieve spiritual purification.
The festival, rooted in Hindu mythology, commemorates a legendary battle over the elixir of immortality. A key highlight is the participation of thousands of Sadhus, holy men who have renounced worldly possessions, identifiable by their distinctive appearance. The opening ceremony featured a mass bathing ritual by scores of naked Sadhus.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended an invitation to global attendees, promoting the event as both a religious and cultural spectacle. UNESCO recognized the Kumbh Mela as an “intangible cultural heritage of humanity” in 2017.
Extensive preparations have been undertaken, including the construction of a massive temporary tent city with 160,000 tents, 150,000 toilets, and a vast water pipeline. Enhanced security measures are in place following past incidents, with over 1,000 police officers, 2,700 AI-powered security cameras, aerial and underwater drones, and improved transportation infrastructure. The unprecedented scale of the event, and concerns over crowd control, has led to substantial investments in safety and logistics. The festival concludes on February 26th.
