**Lucknow, India** – The ongoing Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, is projected to inject a massive economic boost into India, with estimates ranging from ₹2 lakh crore (approximately $24 billion USD) to ₹4 lakh crore (approximately $48 billion USD). This 46-day religious gathering, anticipated to draw over 40 crore (400 million) devotees, is being touted as the world’s largest temporary city, capable of accommodating 5-10 million people at any given time.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath claims the event, with a budget of ₹7,500 crore (₹5,400 crore from the state and ₹2,100 crore from the central government), could contribute over 1% to India’s nominal and real GDP. This surpasses the ₹1.2 lakh crore contribution of the 2019 Kumbh Mela, which attracted 24 crore visitors.

The economic impact is projected across various sectors. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) estimates ₹20,000 crore each from food and beverage and religious items, ₹10,000 crore each from transportation/logistics and tourism, and another ₹10,000 crore from entertainment and media. Further significant contributions are expected from temporary medical services, digital payments, and numerous other goods and services.

Pankaj Gandhi Jaiswal, Chairman of the UP Development Forum, emphasized the unique role of such cultural festivals in India’s economy, contrasting them with Western economic models. He noted that even with a 10% margin for error, the Mahakumbh’s economic impact remains extraordinary.

The event’s infrastructure is equally impressive, with 150,000 tents, 3,000 kitchens, 145,000 restrooms, and 99 parking lots. The Union Culture and Tourism Ministry expects over 1.5 million foreign tourists.

The Mahakumbh 2025 serves as a powerful example of the intersection of spirituality and commerce, highlighting the significant contribution of India’s cultural heritage to its economic growth.
