**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India –** The Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, is underway, drawing millions of devotees despite frigid temperatures and dense fog. The event, which takes place every twelve years, began on January 13th and is expected to conclude on February 26th. Over six crore (60 million) pilgrims have already taken the holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers, during the Paush Purnima and Makar Sankranti festivals.
Authorities anticipate an even larger turnout for the Mauni Amavasya bathing ritual on January 29th, with an estimated eight to ten crore (80-100 million) devotees expected. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to ensure seamless arrangements for this peak period.
The massive gathering has led to a significant increase in airfares to Prayagraj, with some routes experiencing price hikes of over 40%. To manage the influx of people, the Department of Telecommunications has upgraded telecom infrastructure, and innovative QR codes on 50,000 electric poles are helping reunite lost individuals with their families. Mobile food safety laboratories are also being deployed to monitor hygiene standards at eateries. A GIS-based web app provides pilgrims with real-time information on accommodations, ghats, and other essential services.
The event has attracted not only domestic pilgrims but also a 21-member international delegation from 10 countries. High-profile attendees include Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who participated in the holy dip, and various spiritual leaders who have praised the event’s organization and the government’s efforts.
The Mahakumbh Mela is anticipated to generate an economic boost of ₹2 lakh crore (approximately $24 billion USD) for the region, primarily impacting the tourism and hospitality sectors. Major brands have set up booths and are actively engaging with the large crowds. Robust safety measures, including the deployment of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), underwater drones, and AI-enabled cameras, are in place. Despite the massive scale, attendees have largely expressed satisfaction with the security and overall management of the mela.
