Tue Jan 14 11:25:12 UTC 2025: ## Devastating Los Angeles Wildfires Leave 24 Dead, Thousands Homeless

**Los Angeles, CA (January 14, 2025)** – The wildfires raging across Los Angeles County have claimed at least 24 lives and left thousands homeless, marking one of the deadliest and most destructive fire events in the region’s history. The Eaton and Palisades fires, the two largest blazes, have consumed over 37,000 acres, destroying thousands of structures and forcing over 150,000 residents to evacuate.

Six fires ignited on January 7th; three have been contained. However, the Eaton fire (14,000 acres, 27% contained) and Palisades fire (23,000 acres, 13% contained) continue to rage, fueled by strong Santa Ana winds and an eight-month drought. Satellite imagery analysis reveals widespread destruction in residential neighborhoods, particularly around Malibu and Altadena. Entire neighborhoods have been leveled, with an estimated 12,000 buildings destroyed and 11,000 damaged as of January 9th.

Sixteen deaths are attributed to the Eaton fire, and eight to the Palisades fire. At least 16 people remain missing. Nine shelters are currently housing over 700 evacuees. The National Weather Service issued a rare “particularly dangerous situation” warning, predicting severe fire conditions through Wednesday, with high winds exacerbating the situation.

Experts warn that these fires could become the nation’s costliest ever, with early estimates reaching as high as $150 billion. The investigation into the cause of the fires is underway.
