**Chennai, January 16, 2025** – The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will launch a citywide collection and transportation system for construction and demolition waste starting January 17th, according to a recent announcement. The initiative aims to streamline waste management across all 15 zones within four to six weeks.
GCC Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran confirmed the plan via a tweet on Wednesday. The announcement follows a successful week-long intensive clean-up drive (January 7-13) which removed 5,323 metric tons of construction debris from seven zones using 59 vehicles.
Designated dumping points have been established in each zone to curb illegal dumping. The collected waste will be transported to Perungudi and Kodungaiyur processing sites. The GCC’s comprehensive plan aims to significantly improve the city’s waste management infrastructure.
