**Madurai, Tamil Nadu, January 15, 2025** – Over 120 foreign tourists from countries including the USA, UK, Australia, France, and Belgium experienced a vibrant showcase of Tamil culture and tradition at the Pongal celebrations held at the Kalaignar Centenary Jallikattu Arena in Madurai on Wednesday. The event, organized by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department, offered a captivating glimpse into the region’s heritage.

Tourists were greeted with a traditional welcome and treated to mesmerizing performances of Bharatanatyam, Karagattam, Oyilattam, Silambam, and Naiyandi Melan. Many enthusiastically participated alongside the artists. The celebration extended to hands-on experiences, with tourists joining local residents in preparing and enjoying Pongal, and creating colourful kolams.

French couple Yann Ledru and Catherine Gie, involved in the 2024 Paris Olympics infrastructure, expressed their deep admiration for the event’s organization. They, along with other tourists like Tony and Louis Rimolti from the UK, highlighted their delight in experiencing the rich cultural traditions firsthand, often donning traditional attire like veshti and salwar kameez.

Indiran, a Tamil from Malaysia, shared his family’s joy in witnessing the familiar culture in a traditional setting, suggesting that brief explanations before each performance would further enhance the tourists’ understanding and appreciation.

S.M. Sribalamurugan, Tourist Officer of Tamil Nadu Tourism, noted that while over 120 tourists pre-registered, many more attended spontaneously, drawn by word-of-mouth and online platforms. The tourists are scheduled to witness the Jallikattu event in Alanganallur on January 16th. The event showcased the success of Tamil Nadu’s efforts to promote cultural tourism.
