**Mandya, Karnataka – January 15, 2025** – The Karnataka government plans to establish a new University of Agricultural Sciences in Mandya district, Minister for Agriculture N. Cheluvarayaswamy announced Tuesday. The university, to be located at the V.C. Farm, aims to support local farmers and conduct agricultural research. The move comes in response to the large number of Mandya farmers who currently travel to Bengaluru for agricultural information.

The announcement was made during Makar Sankranti celebrations in Nagamangala taluk. MLC Dinesh Gooligowda highlighted other government initiatives, including the distribution of 6 lakh tonnes of seeds for sowing across 84 lakh hectares statewide, ₹1,400 crore in zero-interest loans to 1,47,000 Mandya farmers, and ₹50 crore allocated to the Mysugar factory. He also mentioned the ongoing modernization of the V.C. canal, costing ₹1,400 crore, to improve water access for farmers. Gooligowda further noted the government’s reimbursement of ₹280 crore to the CESC for the Gruha Jyothi scheme, benefiting 4.85 lakh families, and the ₹278 crore spent on free KSRTC tickets under the Shakti scheme.

Mandya Deputy Commissioner Kumara emphasized the cultural significance of Makar Sankranti as a celebration of farmers and the harvest, urging younger generations to participate in these traditions and appreciate the agricultural community.
