Tue Jan 14 16:10:00 UTC 2025: **Meta to Face Indian Parliamentary Summons Over Zuckerberg’s Misinformation on 2024 Elections**
NEW DELHI – Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is facing a summons from India’s Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communication and Information Technology. The summons follows comments made by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg about the 2024 Indian general election, which the committee chair, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, alleges contained misinformation.
During a January 10th podcast, Zuckerberg incorrectly stated that incumbent governments globally, including India’s, lost elections in 2024 due to the pandemic’s impact. This claim was swiftly refuted by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who highlighted the NDA government’s strong performance in the elections and the reaffirmation of public trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Dubey stated that Meta will be summoned to explain the spread of misinformation and will be required to apologize to the Parliament and the Indian people. He emphasized the damaging effect of such misinformation on India’s democratic image. While the BJP did experience some setbacks in the 2024 elections, the NDA alliance secured a comfortable majority.
The incident underscores the growing scrutiny of social media platforms and their role in disseminating information, particularly during election periods. The upcoming parliamentary proceedings are expected to delve into Meta’s fact-checking mechanisms and its responsibility in preventing the spread of false narratives.
