Tue Jan 14 15:38:53 UTC 2025: ## Ugandan Opposition Leader Besigye Faces Treason Charges, Potential Death Penalty

**Kampala, Uganda** – Prominent Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye is facing potential execution after a military court ruled he can be tried on treason charges. The decision, handed down Tuesday, significantly escalates the ongoing legal battle against Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate, ahead of the 2026 elections.

Besigye, who disappeared in Nairobi, Kenya on November 16th before appearing in a Ugandan military court, was initially charged with illegal firearm possession and soliciting foreign military support to undermine national security. However, charges were amended to include treason, a crime punishable by death, with the addition of a third suspect, a serving army officer. Besigye, who denies all charges, remains in custody.

International human rights groups have condemned the proceedings. Amnesty International called Besigye’s abduction a violation of international law, while Human Rights Watch labeled the trial another example of Uganda’s misuse of military courts to suppress opposition. The groups are demanding Besigye’s immediate release.

The case comes amid concerns about the upcoming presidential elections and a potential power vacuum following President Yoweri Museveni’s long rule. Museveni, in power since 1986, is widely expected to seek re-election but has yet to formally announce his candidacy. The lack of a clear successor within his ruling party has fueled anxieties about a volatile political transition. Besigye, a former colonel in the Ugandan military and a key figure in the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party, has a long history of clashes with the government. Despite numerous arrests and alleged assaults throughout his career, this marks the first time he faces such serious charges.
