Tue Jan 14 03:30:00 UTC 2025: **Oregon Health Care Strike Enters Third Day Amidst Negotiation Disputes**

PORTLAND, Ore. – The ongoing strike by Providence health care workers, including physicians, entered its third day Sunday, marked by escalating tensions over the hospital system’s negotiation strategy. Providence’s decision to prioritize negotiations with smaller facilities in Medford and Newberg, before addressing concerns at larger hospitals like Providence Portland and St. Vincent, has sparked outrage among striking workers.

“It feels like gaslighting…a calculated division,” said Daniel Taylor, an acute care RN at St. Vincent, highlighting the feeling that addressing issues at smaller hospitals won’t solve systemic problems affecting all facilities. Workers are demanding comprehensive improvements to retirement packages and benefits to retain staff.

Providence CEO Jennifer Burrows defended the approach, claiming significant progress had been made at Medford and Newberg before the strike. She stated that many nurses at these locations felt their key concerns had been addressed.

However, striking physicians paint a starkly different picture. Dr. Shirley Fox, an OB hospitalist at St. Vincent, described a deteriorating work environment, stating, “Providence has become more of a business rather than a family.” Dr. Jahnavi Chandrashekar, an internal medicine hospitalist at Providence St. Vincent, added that the lack of trust in Providence is a long-standing issue that has finally reached a breaking point.

A key point of contention is the inadequacy of state staffing requirements. Workers argue that these minimum standards don’t meet the necessary level of patient care. The strike continues with no set dates for resuming negotiations at all locations. Providence reported that hospital operations are continuing with the help of temporary replacement workers, but acknowledged the impact of the physician strike due to the lack of replacement staff for doctors. The hospital system stated it will continue to work with federal mediators to establish a negotiation schedule. The financial cost of the strike has not yet been released.
