**Jodhpur, Rajasthan –** Self-styled godman Asaram has been granted interim bail by the Rajasthan High Court until March 31st. This follows a similar bail granted by the Supreme Court last week on medical grounds. Asaram is serving a life sentence for the rape of a minor in 2013.
The High Court’s decision mirrors the Supreme Court’s ruling, citing the similarity of the pleas and the validity of the grounds presented. Asaram’s counsel, Nishant Bora, confirmed that the conditions of his bail are largely the same as those set by the Supreme Court, with the exception that Asaram will be responsible for the travel expenses of three constables if he leaves Jodhpur.
Asaram was sentenced to life imprisonment by a lower court in April 2018 for the rape that occurred at his ashram in Jodhpur. The Supreme Court’s earlier decision to grant bail cited his various health ailments requiring treatment.
