Tue Jan 14 13:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Gen X Faces Retirement Crisis: Sandwich Generation Struggles with Savings and Caregiving

**Altamonte Springs, FL** – America’s 65 million Gen Xers, born between 1965 and 1980, are facing a looming retirement crisis. Caught between caring for aging parents and supporting adult children, many are falling behind on their own retirement savings.

This “sandwich generation” is juggling significant financial and emotional pressures. Nearly half are providing both financial and caregiving assistance to elderly parents while simultaneously helping their children with expenses like college tuition and living costs. This often involves more than 24 hours a week dedicated to caregiving, leading to burnout and further delaying retirement planning.

Financial challenges are compounding the issue. Many Gen Xers started their careers with student loan debt and stagnant wages, hindering their ability to save adequately. Now, caregiving responsibilities often take precedence over retirement savings. Experts warn that Gen X is on track to be the first generation less financially prepared for retirement than their parents. A significant portion have less than $50,000 saved, and many carry substantial debt. The looming prospect of high healthcare costs in retirement, estimated at $300,000 for a retiring couple by Fidelity, adds to their anxieties.

Despite the daunting challenges, a substantial inheritance is on the horizon. An estimated $84 trillion in wealth will transfer from Baby Boomers to younger generations over the next two decades. However, Gen Xers will need every penny to secure a comfortable retirement.
