**Madurai, Tamil Nadu, January 14, 2025** – The Avaniapuram Jallikattu event, held on the first day of the Pongal festival in Madurai, ended with one death and 75 injuries among participants. Despite extensive safety precautions, bull tamer B. Naveen Kumar, 22, succumbed to his injuries at Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) after suffering serious injuries during the 11-round event. Thirty participants sustained multiple injuries, while 45 suffered minor injuries. Five of the 736 participating bulls also sustained minor injuries.
The event, which saw 620 bull tamers participate, was largely incident-free according to police, with a significant number of safety measures in place. These included a large police presence, Indian Red Cross Society volunteers, Animal Husbandry Department officials, ambulances, fire engines, and a mobile X-ray unit—a first for the event—along with an Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) unit and medical personnel from GRH and the district headquarters hospital.
Despite the tragedy, the competition proceeded with Karthik winning first place after taming 19 bulls, earning him a car, a cow, and a calf. Divakar took second place, taming 15 bulls and receiving a motorcycle. The first prize for the bull went to Malaiyandi, whose bull remained in the arena for 60 seconds, winning a tractor, a cow, and a calf. Prizes were awarded by Tamil Nadu Ministers P. Moorthy and P.T.R. Palanivel Thiaga Rajan. Further Jallikattu events are scheduled for Palamedu on January 15th and Alanganallur on January 16th.
