**Mumbai, January 15, 2025** – Prime Minister Narendra Modi today commissioned three advanced naval vessels – the Surat destroyer, Nilgiri frigate, and Vaghsheer submarine – significantly enhancing India’s naval power and furthering its self-reliance goals. The commissioning ceremony took place at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai.
The Surat, the final ship in the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project, is one of the world’s largest and most sophisticated destroyers. Boasting 75% indigenous content, it features state-of-the-art weaponry, sensor packages, and advanced network capabilities.
The Nilgiri, the first of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project, represents a new generation of indigenous frigates. Designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, it incorporates advanced features for improved survivability, seakeeping, and stealth.
The Vaghsheer, the final submarine of the P75 Scorpene Project, built in collaboration with France’s Naval Group, showcases India’s growing expertise in submarine construction.
Prime Minister Modi stated that the commissioning of these three frontline combatants strengthens India’s position as a global defence leader and underscores the nation’s commitment to self-reliance.
