Tue Jan 14 12:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Sabarimala Makaravilakku 2025: Thousands Await Makarajyothi

**Pathanamthitta, Kerala:** The annual Makaravilakku festival at Sabarimala is underway, with thousands of pilgrims already gathered, awaiting the celestial Makarajyothi. The highly anticipated event, which marks the culmination of the pilgrimage season, is expected to draw around two lakh devotees this year.

The main rituals commenced today with the ceremonial procession carrying the Thiruvabharanam (sacred ornaments) reaching Sannidhanam at 5:30 PM, followed by the Mahadeeparadhana (grand lamp lighting ceremony) at 6:30 PM. The Makarajyothi, a celestial light believed to appear on the eastern hilltop of Ponnambalamedu, is expected to be visible after the Deeparadhana.

Pilgrims have been thronging Sabarimala for the last two days and remain at the site awaiting the appearance of the Makarajyothi, instead of descending the mountain. Over 5000 police personnel have been deployed across Sabarimala, Nilackal, Pamba, and surrounding areas to ensure the safety and security of the massive crowd. Entry to Sabarimala is restricted until 12 noon today.

The Travancore Devaswom Board President, P.S. Prasanth, confirmed that all arrangements for the Makaravilakku celebrations are complete. He also urged pilgrims to exercise caution and advised against families with young children visiting on January 14th, suggesting alternative dates between January 15th and 17th for Thiruvabharan darshan. Strict traffic regulations are in place in Nilackal from tomorrow morning.

The President also emphasized the need for self-regulation among devotees to prevent accidents. Comprehensive security measures, including barricades and lighting, are in place. Pilgrims are advised to strictly follow police instructions during their return journey from Pamba.
