Tue Jan 14 10:22:44 UTC 2025: ## Millions Take Holy Dip as Mahakumbh Mela 2025 Begins in Prayagraj
**Prayagraj, India** – The Mahakumbh Mela 2025, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, commenced in Prayagraj on January 14th with the first “Amrit Snan” (holy bath). Millions of devotees, including many from foreign countries, flocked to the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers, to participate in the auspicious ritual.
Authorities reported over 25 million pilgrims had taken the holy dip by 3 PM on the first day, a number expected to increase throughout the festival. The event, officially dubbed “Amrit Snan” by the government, saw a procession of 13 Akharas (religious orders) leading the sacred immersion. Devotees, many travelling despite illness and challenging weather conditions, expressed immense faith and devotion. One devotee, Lok Gayika Malini Awasthi, described the experience as “amazing” and praised the excellent arrangements, security, and facilities provided.
Security measures were heightened, with a 24/7 police presence, including watchtowers and extensive use of CCTV cameras and drones. Despite the massive crowds, the DGP reported smooth proceedings, highlighting the efficient deployment of police and paramilitary forces, although the Army was kept on standby due to the growing number of attendees. A stampede narrowly avoided at Jhansi railway station highlighted the logistical challenges of managing such a large-scale event. Access to Prayagraj was restricted, with vehicles banned from certain areas.
A dedicated Mahakumbh app was launched to assist pilgrims with information on accommodation, parking, and other necessities. The event, running for several weeks, has attracted international attention, with foreign dignitaries and media representatives present. Even Apple co-founder Steve Jobs’ wife, Laurene Powell, was reported to have taken a dip in the Sangam. However, the high number of attendees led to the closure of the Late Hanuman Temple for safety reasons.
While the majority of the event passed peacefully, a slight political note was struck when a Samajwadi Party leader urged a Sadhvi to refrain from politicizing the Kumbh Mela. The event itself exemplified religious harmony with participants from diverse backgrounds, expressing a universal message of unity and “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the world is one family).
