Tue Jan 14 16:37:43 UTC 2025: ## Millions Take Holy Dip as Mahakumbh Mela 2025 Begins in Prayagraj

**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India** – The Mahakumbh Mela 2025, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, commenced on January 13th, 2025, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, with the first “Amrit Snan” (holy bath). Over 35 million devotees participated in the initial ritual on Makar Sankranti, according to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The event, which runs until February 26th, is expected to draw over 450 million pilgrims throughout its duration.

The event began with a procession of 13 Akharas (religious orders) before their participation in the sacred dip at the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers. Stringent security measures, including a seven-layer security system and AI technology, are in place to monitor the massive crowd. Despite the frigid temperatures, the enthusiasm remained high, although a significant number of pilgrims and sadhus reported illness, primarily due to cold and heart-related issues. One Mahamandaleshwar (high-ranking monk) experienced a medical emergency during the procession and received immediate CPR from devotees before being transported to a hospital.

The event has attracted a diverse international crowd, with devotees from numerous countries participating in the holy bath. The Chief Minister shared images of the event on social media, highlighting the peaceful and unified atmosphere. Among the attendees were notable figures such as a former model from Uttarakhand who took monastic vows, and an IIT Bombay alumnus now known as “Engineer Baba,” who connected science and spirituality for the pilgrims.

While the massive influx of pilgrims caused some challenges, including a stampede at Jhansi railway station, authorities reported effective management of the crowds. A dedicated mobile app provides information and assistance to attendees regarding accommodation, parking, and other necessities. Local officials and the Uttar Pradesh DGP, Prashant Kumar, have confirmed the deployment of a large police force, drones, and CCTV cameras to ensure the safety and security of all participants. The event continues to attract devotees and offers a unique blend of faith, tradition, and cultural exchange.
