**Prayagraj, India –** The highly anticipated Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj is underway, with preparations complete for the first “Amrit Snan” (holy dip) on Makar Sankranti, January 14th. The Mela administration released the official schedule for the 13 Akharas (religious orders) participating in the sacred ritual. The schedule, designed to maintain traditional customs, designates specific times for each Akhara’s participation.
According to the press release, Shri Panchayati Akhara Mahanirvani and Shri Shambhu Panchayati Atal Akhara will be the first to perform the Amrit Snan, beginning their procession at 5:15 AM and concluding at 7:55 AM. A detailed schedule outlining departure and arrival times, as well as the duration of the bath for each Akhara, has been distributed. The schedule continues throughout the day, with the final Amrit Snan performed by Shri Panchayati Nirmal Akhara. The sequence includes a mix of Sanyasi and Bairagi Akharas, as well as Udasin Akharas, each with allotted time slots.
The Mahakumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, is held every twelve years at one of four locations in India. This Poorna Kumbh, which began recently, will continue until February 26th, 2025. Several other significant “snan” dates are scheduled throughout the Mela, including January 29th (Mauni Amavasya), February 3rd (Basant Panchami), February 12th (Maghi Purnima), and February 26th (Maha Shivaratri).
