Tue Jan 14 17:52:46 UTC 2025: ## Millions Gather for Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj; Millions More Expected
**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India** – The Mahakumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, commenced on Monday, January 13th, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Expected to draw tens of millions of pilgrims over its six-week duration, the event, held every 12 years, concludes on February 26th.
Over 16 million devotees participated in the “Amrit Snan” ritual on the second day, immersing themselves in the sacred Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers. This holy dip is believed to cleanse sins and bring spiritual liberation.
The Mahakumbh Mela is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology, tracing its origins to ancient texts like the Mahabharata. Its significance is linked to the Samudra Manthan, the churning of the ocean, where drops of the nectar of immortality are said to have fallen at four locations, including Prayagraj.
The event’s historical importance is underscored by accounts from the seventh-century Chinese traveler Xuanzang, who documented the convergence of spirituality and commerce at the Mela. Today, it remains the largest religious gathering globally, attracting pilgrims and tourists seeking spiritual cleansing and enlightenment.
In anticipation of the massive influx of pilgrims, a travel guide highlighting ten significant nearby holy sites has been released. These include Varanasi, Ayodhya, Chitrakoot, Mirzapur, Vidhyanchal, Shringverpur, Kosambi, Kara, Bodh Gaya (further afield), and Sarnath. Each site offers unique historical and religious significance.
The event has already made headlines with Uttar Pradesh skydiver Anamika Sharma hoisting the Mahakumbh flag at 13,000 feet over Bangkok in a pre-event spectacle. Authorities anticipate the arrival of over 40 crore (400 million) devotees throughout the Mela’s duration.
