Tue Jan 14 14:08:39 UTC 2025: ## Millions Take Holy Dip at Mahakumbh 2025’s First ‘Amrit Snan’

**Prayagraj, India** – Millions of devotees converged at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj for the first “Amrit Snan” (royal bath) of the Mahakumbh Mela 2025 on Makar Sankranti, January 14th. This auspicious occasion, marking the Sun’s transition to the Northern Hemisphere, drew lakhs of pilgrims seeking a holy dip in the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended their congratulations to the participants, estimating over 3.5 crore (35 million) devotees participated in the first bath. The event showcased a vibrant display of faith, featuring Naga Sadhus (naked ascetics covered in ash), Akharas (Hindu monastic orders), and a diverse array of religious leaders. The first Amrit Snan is particularly significant in the Hindu faith, stemming from the belief that drops of the nectar of immortality fell to Earth at this location.

The Mahakumbh, the world’s largest religious gathering, is expected to continue until February 26th (Maha Shivratri), with several key dates for further “Shahi Snans” (royal baths) scheduled for January 29th (Mauni Amavasya), February 3rd (Basant Panchami), and February 12th (Maghi Purnima).

Authorities reported a smooth process despite the large crowds, though one individual was arrested for spreading false information about deaths at the event. The event also drew international attention, with attendees from countries such as Italy and Russia sharing their experiences. To assist visitors, a dedicated toll-free tourist helpline (1800111363 or 1363) is operating in multiple languages. The Indian Railways also launched two special trains to facilitate travel to the event. Despite a chilly morning (13.4°C), the enthusiasm of the devotees remained high, marking the Mahakumbh 2025 as a momentous spiritual event.
