Tue Jan 14 17:02:44 UTC 2025: ## Millions Take Holy Dip at Mahakumbh 2025’s First ‘Amrit Snan’
**Prayagraj, India** – The Mahakumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj witnessed its first “Amrit Snan” (sacred bath) on Tuesday, Makar Sankranti, drawing millions of devotees to the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of three sacred rivers. Over 2 crore (20 million) people participated in the auspicious dip, marking the beginning of this massive religious gathering.
The event, considered one of the largest religious congregations globally, featured a spectacular procession of Naga Sadhus—holy men who cover their bodies in ash and wear long dreadlocks—along with other ascetics and religious leaders. The first Amrit Snan is believed to hold particular spiritual significance.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath congratulated the devotees, praising their participation in this important event, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared his congratulations via social media, alongside images of the bath. Spiritual leaders, such as Swami Rambhadracharya and Jaya Kishori, also expressed their joy and praised the arrangements made by the government.
Despite some complaints from Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav regarding the provision of basic amenities, the event was largely successful. A light and sound show recounting the mythological significance of the Kumbh Mela further enhanced the experience.
However, the large-scale event also presented challenges. School closures were implemented in Prayagraj on January 15th due to heavy traffic congestion. Sadly, a fatal bus accident involving pilgrims from Telangana marred the celebrations. Despite these setbacks, the Mahakumbh Mela continued, with added support from Air India, which is operating daily flights between Delhi and Prayagraj, and the Indian Railways, which established a 24/7 War Room to monitor train movements and passenger services. A dedicated tourist helpline (1800111363 or 1363) was also available to assist visitors.
The Mahakumbh Mela 2025 will continue with several more significant bathing days scheduled throughout January and February, culminating on Maha Shivratri on February 26th. International visitors also shared their experiences, expressing their joy and spiritual enrichment from participating in the event. A case was also filed against an individual spreading misinformation online about deaths during the event.
