Tue Jan 14 09:09:12 UTC 2025: ## Millions Take Holy Dip at Maha Kumbh Mela

**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, January 14, 2025** – The Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj witnessed a massive turnout on Tuesday, January 14th, 2025, as millions of devotees participated in the first major “Amrit Snan,” a ceremonial holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers. This auspicious event coincided with Makar Sankranti, marking the sun’s transition into Capricorn.

Sadhus from the Shri Panchayati Akhada Mahanirvani and Shri Shambhu Panchayati Atal Akhara were the first to take the dip, beginning in the early hours of the morning. By 8:30 am, an estimated 1.38 crore (13.8 million) devotees had participated. Monday’s Paush Purnima snan had already drawn approximately 1.75 crore devotees. Thirteen akharas (Hindu monastic orders) are participating in this year’s Kumbh Mela.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath greeted devotees, calling the event a testament to India’s culture and faith. He noted the participation of international devotees, highlighting the global appeal of the Maha Kumbh. One such devotee, Pinelopi Khanna, a Greek national, expressed her gratitude for the unique spiritual experience.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years, is considered particularly auspicious this year, with seers claiming the celestial alignment hasn’t occurred in 144 years. The event will continue until February 26th, with four more major bathing days expected to draw even larger crowds. The “Amrit Snan,” previously known as “Shahi Snan,” is believed to cleanse sins and provide spiritual merit.
