Tue Jan 14 03:18:09 UTC 2025: **Indiana Skywatchers to Witness Rare Celestial Event: Wolf Moon, Planetary Conjunction**

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana residents are in for a treat this Monday, January 13th, as the first full moon of 2025, known as the Wolf Moon, graces the night sky. This celestial event coincides with a rare planetary alignment, making it a particularly noteworthy astronomical spectacle.

Four planets – Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars – will be visible, a phenomenon NASA describes as uncommon. Venus and Saturn will appear exceptionally close in a conjunction, while Mars will shine exceptionally bright due to its alignment opposite the sun.

The Wolf Moon, named for the wolves’ winter howls, will reach peak illumination on Monday evening. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, moonrise in Indianapolis is estimated around 5:22 p.m., with the moon crossing the meridian at 12:17 a.m. before setting at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday. Specific moonrise and moonset times for other areas can be found on the Old Farmer’s Almanac website.

While the National Weather Service predicts cloudy skies and temperatures around 10 degrees Fahrenheit, AccuWeather offers a slightly more optimistic forecast, suggesting clearer skies and lows around 8 degrees.

This full moon, also known by Native American tribes as the Center Moon, Freeze Up Moon, and Hard Moon, offers a unique opportunity for stargazing, despite the potentially chilly and cloudy conditions. For those interested in further celestial observations, NASA recommends checking their website for upcoming events. Several free astronomy apps are also available to assist in identifying stars, planets, and constellations. The next full moon, the Snow Moon, is anticipated on February 12th, 2025.
