**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh –** Former Solapur mayor and NCP (SP) leader Mahesh Kothe, 60, passed away Tuesday after suffering a heart attack while participating in a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj during the Makar Sankranti festival.
Kothe, who had travelled to Prayagraj for the “Shahi Snan,” experienced the heart attack around 7:30 AM in the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers. Despite being rushed to a medical facility, he was declared dead on arrival. His body is expected to be transported back to Solapur for funeral rites on Wednesday.
Kothe, the youngest former mayor of Solapur, unsuccessfully contested the November 2022 assembly elections. He is survived by his wife and son. The incident occurred amidst frigid weather conditions in Prayagraj, where millions of devotees participated in the Makar Sankranti celebrations.
NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar expressed his condolences, tweeting about Kothe’s significant influence on Solapur’s social and political landscape and extending his sympathies to the grieving family.
