Tue Jan 14 08:16:31 UTC 2025: ## “Real-Life Robinson Crusoe” Mauro Morandi Dies at 85

**Modena, Italy** – Mauro Morandi, the Italian man who gained worldwide fame as the “real-life Robinson Crusoe” for his three-decade solitary existence on Budelli Island, has passed away at the age of 85. Morandi died over the weekend in Modena, his hometown, following a decline in his health.

Morandi’s unique life began in 1989 when his catamaran voyage to Polynesia ended in shipwreck near Budelli, a small island off the coast of Sardinia. He chose to remain, becoming the island’s sole inhabitant and caretaker. For over 30 years, he lived a self-sufficient life, mastering sustainable living techniques and keeping the island’s beaches pristine. He even established a makeshift solar power system and a fireplace for heating. While he received supplies as part of his caretaker duties, he largely lived off the grid.

His solitary existence earned him the nickname “Robinson Crusoe,” a reference to the famous literary castaway. However, in 2021, Morandi was evicted from Budelli following a dispute with the La Maddalena national park authorities, who planned to redevelop the island as an environmental education center.

Relocating to a one-bedroom apartment on La Maddalena, Morandi struggled to adapt to life after his idyllic solitude. He reportedly found the noise and bustle of civilization difficult to handle after so many years of peace and quiet. After a fall last summer, he spent time in a care home before returning to Modena, where he passed away. His remarkable story serves as a testament to a life lived on his own terms, a life intertwined with the beauty and challenges of a remote island paradise.
