Mon Jan 13 23:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Stock Markets to Remain Open on Makar Sankranti Despite Bank Holiday
**Mumbai, India** – While Makar Sankranti, celebrated across India with varying regional names like Lohri and Pongal, brings a public holiday to many states and banks on January 14th, 2025, the Indian stock markets will remain open for trading.
The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) have confirmed that Makar Sankranti is not included in their 2025 holiday calendar. This means trading will proceed as usual, from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM, encompassing equities, derivatives, commodities, bonds, and currencies.
This decision contrasts with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) declaring January 14th a bank holiday. The stock exchanges, however, do not automatically observe all public holidays or regional festivals. Their 2025 calendar lists only 14 official trading holidays, excluding several major regional celebrations. Additional closures will occur only on weekends; for example, Republic Day and Ram Navami fall on weekends in 2025.
The full list of 2025 stock market holidays includes: March 31 (Id-Ul-Fitr), April 10 (Shri Mahavir Jayanti), April 14 (Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti), October 2 (Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti), October 21 (Diwali – Laxmi Pujan), October 22 (Diwali – Balipratipada), and November 5 (Prakash Gurpurb).
