**Madrid, Spain** – External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has underscored India’s rising global influence and its role as a significant partner during international crises, during a visit to Spain. Addressing the Indian diaspora, Jaishankar described India-Spain relations as poised for significant growth.
A key highlight of his visit was an unprecedented invitation to address Spain’s ambassadors at a global conference, marking the first time a foreign minister was afforded this honor. Jaishankar attributed this invitation to India’s enhanced global standing, stating that countries recognize the strategic benefits of strong ties with India in the current volatile geopolitical landscape.
He characterized India as a “new India,” a significant economic power (currently the fifth-largest, projected to be third) recognized for its capabilities and contributions to global discussions. Jaishankar emphasized India’s unique ability to engage with diverse nations, citing Prime Minister Modi’s simultaneous engagement with countries holding opposing views, such as Russia and Ukraine, or Israel and Iran. He highlighted India’s commitment to multilateralism through its membership in both the Quad and BRICS.
India’s assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic was also a focal point, with Jaishankar noting that many countries relied on India for vaccine supplies. He cited Spain’s request for Hydroxychloroquine as an example. He further stressed India’s willingness to act as a bridge between nations in conflict, emphasizing that this role is based on goodwill and the ability to build trust, not solely on financial resources.
Bilateral trade between India and Spain, currently valued at €10 billion annually, is expected to increase further, with potential collaborations emerging in sectors such as railways, automobiles, clean technologies, and space.
Further strengthening the relationship, Jaishankar announced the upcoming establishment of a Spanish consulate in Bengaluru. He also revealed plans for a 2026 dual-year celebration focusing on culture, artificial intelligence, and tourism between the two nations. Finally, Jaishankar expressed gratitude to the Indian community in Spain for their contribution to India’s global image and foreign policy efforts.
