**NEW DELHI, January 14 (ANI/The Tribune)** – The inaugural Kho Kho World Cup, a landmark event for the traditional Indian sport, commenced in New Delhi on Monday with a vibrant opening ceremony. The tournament, running until January 19th, features teams from around the globe competing in both men’s and women’s divisions.
Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) president Sudhanshu Mittal expressed immense pride and satisfaction at the event’s launch, calling it a “dream come true.” He emphasized the potential for Kho Kho to gain international popularity, stating that the sport is “no less than any other.”
The opening ceremony at Indira Gandhi Stadium included a sand art projection, a ceremonial parade, and cultural performances showcasing India’s rich heritage. The first men’s match saw India face Nepal, while the women’s competition begins today with a match between England and Australia. India’s men’s team will also play Brazil later today.
Mittal expressed gratitude to Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar for inaugurating the event and is confident that the World Cup will raise Kho Kho’s global profile. He believes the tournament represents a significant step towards achieving the KKFI’s long-term goal of establishing Kho Kho as a major international sport.
