**Mumbai, India** – Larsen & Toubro (L&T)’s head of HR, Sonica Muraleedharan, has defended Chairman SN Subrahmanyan following a backlash over his controversial remarks suggesting employees work 90 hours a week. Subrahmanyan’s comments, made during an internal address, sparked widespread outrage and criticism on social media, with even celebrities weighing in.
Muraleedharan, in a LinkedIn post, clarified that Subrahmanyan’s words were misinterpreted and taken out of context. She stated that he never mandated a 90-hour work week, characterizing his remarks as casual. She emphasized Subrahmanyan’s leadership style, describing him as a caring leader who fosters a strong sense of unity and belonging within the company.
The controversy began last week after a video surfaced of Subrahmanyan suggesting employees work extended hours, including Sundays, to maintain competitiveness. He reportedly stated, “I regret I am not able to make you work on Sundays,” adding a comment about the time spent with his wife. These comments prompted strong reactions, with criticism coming from prominent figures including actor Deepika Padukone, Serum Institute of India CEO Adar Poonawalla, and Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra, who voiced their disapproval of the proposed work schedule. The comparison to similar comments made last year by Infosys founder Narayana Murthy also fuelled the debate.
Muraleedharan urged the public to understand the context of Subrahmanyan’s statements, highlighting his positive impact on the company and his employees. She concluded by advocating for a more supportive approach towards leaders who, despite their sometimes controversial remarks, inspire growth and positive change within their organizations.
