Mon Jan 13 22:03:00 UTC 2025: ## Karnataka’s Rice Procurement Quota for PDS Increased by Centre

**Bengaluru, January 14, 2025** – The Indian government has significantly increased Karnataka’s rice procurement quota for the Public Distribution System (PDS). Responding to a request from Karnataka’s Agriculture Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy, the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution has raised the procurement cap from 1.5 lakh tonnes to 5 lakh tonnes for the 2024-25 Kharif season.

This represents an increase of 3.5 lakh tonnes. Minister Cheluvarayaswamy had argued that the previous limit was insufficient given Karnataka’s rising demand and its substantial rice production capacity of 48.91 lakh tonnes. The decision will ensure greater availability of rice for the PDS in Karnataka.
