Mon Jan 13 23:58:20 UTC 2025: ## Mahakumbh Mela 2025: Millions of Pilgrims Expected, ₹4 Lakh Crore Economic Impact Predicted

**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh:** The Mahakumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, commenced today in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Millions of pilgrims and ascetics from India and across the globe are expected to attend the 45-day event, culminating on February 26th with Maha Shivratri.

The Uttar Pradesh government has allocated ₹7,000 crore for the mela, which is spread across 4,000 hectares. Authorities anticipate over 400 million pilgrims will visit the Sangam confluence, generating an estimated economic impact exceeding ₹4 lakh crore (approximately $48 billion USD). This prediction is based on an average per-person expenditure of ₹10,000, according to industry experts cited by news agency IANS. Earlier estimates projected ₹2 lakh crore based on a lower per-person spending figure. This significant economic activity is expected to boost both nominal and real GDP by up to 1%.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath noted the economic success of the 2019 Ardh Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, which attracted approximately 240 million pilgrims and contributed ₹1.2 lakh crore to the state’s economy. The 2025 Mahakumbh is particularly significant as it marks a rare astrological confluence occurring only every 144 years. Pilgrims are expected to spend significantly on food, lodging, travel, and religious items, stimulating economic activity across the state and the nation.

However, authorities also warn of increased risks of scams and theft targeting pilgrims during the mela. Citizens are advised to remain vigilant against fraudulent activities.
